Higher Education academics have voiced their disappointment at the announcement of the closure of The Office for Learning and Teaching. From 30 June 2016, fifty percent of Promotion of Excellence in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PELTHE) funding will be redirected to help students make informed decisions about their University Education, and to implement measures to improve quality in higher education in Australia.

The closure and funding redirection results in no new grants or fellowships being administered from July 2016, impacting directly on new program development, and research capacities for many educators.

UQ academics currently in receipt of OLT funding are advised all ongoing grant and fellowship projects will be managed to their conclusion, and awarded as usual. Final projects are scheduled to complete in 2018.

Awards through the Australian Awards for University Teaching programme (AAUT) for national recognition of excellence and innovation in learning and teaching will continue to be funded. The portal on the OLT website will remain open to accept nominations until its transfer to the Department of Education and Training website.

The 2016 Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) citations and awards will continue as planned, with state-based citations ceremonies scheduled for September and October and a national awards ceremony in December 2016.
