Professionalisation in Academic Development: Exploring learning designer roles in a changing higher education sector
Research Project (Ethics approval 2017000315)

Through this project we will develop a snapshot of current Learning Designers’ practices across Australian universities to identify and document:

  • relevant skills, knowledge, education and professional background,
  • the types of roles undertaken and employment conditions,
  • challenges and enablers in these roles and conditions and
  • areas for future attention.
  • For Institutional T&L Leaders

The rapidly changing roles of learning designers (instructional designers, educational designers, elearning designers, etc) in academic development challenge the way we:

    • conceptualise and design professional academic development roles
    • attract suitable staff to these roles
    • provide effective ongoing management and
    • retain excellent staff.

However, little is known about how best to attract these new staff members both from an institutional and learning designer perspective. More clarity is needed in defining the characteristics of these roles and what personal attributes, knowledge and capabilities are needed.

Help us understand the roles and activities of learning designers in your institution. As a leader in teaching and learning at your institution please complete our online survey:

We anticipate it will take approximately 15 minutes. We will contact institutions shortly with a similar survey for learning designers.

  • For Learning Designers

The rapidly changing roles of learning designers (instructional designers, educational designers, elearning designers, etc) provide challenges around:

    • Career pathways,
    • Professional development,
    • Changing roles and focus and
    • Job security.

Help us understand the roles and activities of learning designers. As a learning designer in higher education please complete our online survey:

We anticipate it will take approximately 15 minutes. We have contacted institutions with a similar survey for teaching and learning leaders or directors.
