The Summer Research Program provides UQ students with an opportunity to gain experience working alongside a researcher in a formal research environment in their area of interest at UQ.

By participating in the program, scholars will gain:

  • An opportunity to develop new academic and professional skills to enhance employability.
  • Experience to test drive research before embarking on future research studies.
  • Access to research networks and connections with other staff and post-graduate students.
  • Supervision by world-class UQ researchers.
  • Access to world-class facilities and experiences.
  • The possibility of obtaining credit towards your degree or the UQ Employability Award.

The Summer Research Program is coordinated by the Student Employability Centre and is open to undergraduate, honours or masters by coursework students who:

  • Are currently enrolled at UQ at the time of application and will remain a full-time enrolled student at UQ for the duration of the research program (i.e. not graduating in Semester 2, 2020)
  • Are studying for a degree relevant to the research discipline
  • Have a high level of academic achievement during their undergraduate degree.

ITaLI Summer Research Program Scholarships

Summer Research Scholars will receive a Summer Research Scholarship equivalent to $360 per week (paid as two lump sums during the program). The period of eligibility for scholarship payments is up to 10 weeks, generally commencing in mid-November and concluding in mid-February. The funding is not normally paid during periods away from the University, such as during the Christmas break.

Summer Research Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, motivation for participation in the program, and the enrolling units' nomination.

To be eligible for the scholarship, scholars will also need to meet the following conditions:

  • Participate in the program between mid-November and mid-February
  • Participate in the program for six weeks or more
  • Work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

There is one project available for the 2020-21 Summer Research program.

How to apply

  1. Review the program guidelines, ensuring you meet the eligibility criteria. 
  2. Review the Summer Research Program project available through ITaLI (see above).
  3. Make contact with the supervisor listed in the project description document via email and provide a copy of your CV. The supervisor will respond to you to discuss the project and determine your suitability to carry out the work.
  4. Obtain endorsement (supporting statement) from the UQ project supervisor for your application (an email will be sufficient).
  5. Submit your application via the online form by the closing date (remember to upload the supporting statement from a UQ supervisor).
  6. You will be notified of the outcome of your application in accordance with the scholarship guidelines.
