Students' assessment literacy plays an essential but under-emphasised role in higher education. Assessment literacy crosses a huge variety of skills, competencies and dispositions, from knowledge of the assessment process, to epistemological concerns of knowing within a discipline. Knowing what the requirements are for assessment can be a form of privilege, with vulnerable students becoming more at-risk of disengagement without adequate assessment literacy.
In this community of inquiry, we're exploring two articles. The first 'Assessment literacy and student learning: the case for explicitly developing students "assessment literacy"' by Smith et al demonstrates the effectiveness in building these literacies in students. The second paper explores the nuanced perspectives of Xiaotong Zhu & Carol Evans' 2022 paper 'Enhancing the development and understanding of assessment literacy in higher education' who argue that these skills need to be embedded into the curriculum. Join us in discussions of the advantages and challenges involved in building assessment literacy for students within the higher education context.
