In our inaugural community of inquiry, the Digital Assessment team from ITALI will be running an event for learning designers, course coordinators, and educators on programmatic approaches to assessment. This stands in contrast to high-stakes assessment tasks, where student achievement is measured on their successes or failures on individual assessment pieces. We look at two articles on programmatic approaches to assessment.

Programmatic assessment (PA), involves the deliberate design of assessment tasks and feedback across a program or plan of study, to both developmentally support student learning and make robust decisions about students' achievement of identified programmatic learning outcomes. Programmatic assessment design and data can also be used to assess how curriculum and course teaching are supporting (and could further support) student learning and achievement.

Dr Luke Zaphir and the Digital Assessment team will be discussing the key ideas from our two articles. Considerations for the session include:

  • what are the advantages and disadvantages of programmatic assessment?
  • what are the implications of programmatic assessment for curriculum design and instructional strategies?
  • what would a successful programmatic assessment look like in each context?
  • what might be the barriers to successful implementation to this approach in each context?
  • what elements could be utilised from a partial adoption of programmatic assessment?
