Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education — so what does ethical / effective / responsible / critical AI use look like in UQ teaching, learning, and assessment? Let’s talk about it. This 90-minute open discussion is open for students and staff to come together to explore how AI is being used across disciplines and degree programs. In a free-form (but facilitated) conversation, we will talk, listen and learn about:

  • How AI is being used in disciplinary teaching practises, and
  • What “ethical AI use” means in different academic contexts.

This session is the start of ongoing work towards answering a broader question:

  • What shared principles can guide AI literacy and educational use at UQ?

Your contributions will inform the development of a UQ-wide AI in Education Network, which will co-design a framework to guide a shared understanding of AI in education at UQ. Building from the on-the-ground insights of students and staff, this framework will ideally guide discipline-contextualised embedding of AI literacy in degree programs and ensure students and staff can use AI wisely for learning.

This session will be held once on campus and once online, ensuring broad accessibility for the UQ community. Can’t make it for the whole time? Just come in when you can. Join us for this crucial conversation and help shape UQ’s approach to AI in education. The discussion will be facilitated by:

  • Dr Beck Wise is an expert in professional, technical, and academic writing, including writing in digital environments and science communication.
  • Professor Janet Wiles is an expert in human-centred AI, leading multidisciplinary research in language technologies, social robotics, and AI for health and education.
  • Professor Kelly Matthews is an expert on student voice in higher education focused on educational impact through learner-teacher partnership and co-design.

Note: this event has been rescheduled from 5 March

About Lead Through Learning Events

These events support Lead through Learning (2025-2027), our whole-of-University strategy addressing the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in education.

The strategy has 2 main goals:

  • Preparing students for responsible AI use. Equipping students with ethical, practical AI skills they can use in their studies, careers, and communities, and preparing them to lead and shape the future of AI integration in their fields.
  • Maintaining the integrity of the learning process. Ensuring that academic standards are upheld through secure and credible assessment practices.
