In this facilitated panel, we will hear from our most important stakeholders, our students. They will tell us about their leadership journey whilst attending UQ before we reflect on our teaching and learning practice as a conduit for leadership development.

UQ has been empowering students to 'Create Change' for decades, but often through emergent learning experiences rather than explicit leadership development.

Our student panellists (Liveris Academy Scholars from across faculties) will reflect on their learning experiences at UQ and what aspects of their education has helped them to grow as leaders. Where have they seen leadership being modelled at UQ? What activities have given them the opportunity to practice their emerging leadership skills?

Our two expert discussants will then unpack insights for how we can evolve our pedagogical approaches (Aliisa Mylonas) and leadership development practice (Dr Richard O'Quinn); fostering leadership capability-building opportunities for our students.

Session participants will:

  • learn from our students about how UQ has contributed to their leadership journey and capabilities
  • understand the role of student leadership development opportunities for delivering on our broader mission
  • recognise opportunities to embed leadership learning inside the classroom
  • share ideas about how student leadership could be fostered through extra-curricular experiences and opportunities.

Presenters:

  • Professor Tyler Okimoto (facilitator), Acting Head of School, UQ Business School
  • Professor Tim Kastelle (facilitator), Director, Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership
