About this workshop

This session combines interactive presentations with corresponding hands-on activities where participants will:

  • Learn about existing Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) initiatives at UQ and in other Australian universities, as well as the knowledge and skills needed to navigate an increasingly culturally diverse environment.
  • Have an opportunity to use, test and try a Microsoft integrated (and soon to be UQ SSO-secured) tool called FlipGrid, as a strategy to increase belonging and connection with peers and instructors within UQ through the use of authentic and engaging video-blogging. Participants are invited to bring several of their own assessment tasks for this activity.
  • Learn about a well-established literacy framework that can be used to support student learning and assessment design in any subject area. Using this framework, participants will reflect critically on the assessment prompts written for both their own and their colleagues’ courses. Through group discussion, participants will work collaboratively to produce assessment prompts that guide students to produce desired response types.

This workshop is important because it gives UQ faculty frameworks with which to level the playing field for our culturally and linguistically diverse students.
