
Principal Practitioner – Teaching Awards
Position: UQ Microbiology major convenor, Associate Professor (Microbiology), School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences
Jack Wang is a Teaching-Focused microbiologist from the School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience, who has applied his interdisciplinary research background across Microbiology, Bioinformatics and Information Technology towards scalable models of Science Education. As the UQ Microbiology major convenor, Jack led the integration of Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences across the curriculum and established a national statement for microbiology graduates through the National Examinations and Qualifications Board of the Australian Society for Microbiology. Jack has made over 400 educational videos, which have been seen by >2 million users from 80 countries. He serves as the National Chair of Member Engagement for Australian Science Communicators – the largest forum for science communicators and science journalists in the country.
Jack is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Senior Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology, and an editor for the Journal for Microbiology & Biology Education. His work has been recognised through School, Faculty, and national teaching awards: in 2020 he was named the AAUT Australian University Teacher of the Year, and the Australian Society for Microbiology Teacher of the year. In his role as Principal Practitioner of Teaching Awards, Jack will translate his science communication experience towards a narrative-driven approach for spotlighting teaching excellence across the sector.
