What's Working? AI Assessment Transformation in Practice
Join us for a collaborative conversation that will explore how UQ academics are changing their assessment practices in response to AI.
Presenter: Associate Professor Joan Li
This presentation shares insights from exploratory work prompted by a significant challenge in written assessment marking, leading to an exploratory work investigating the feasibility, potential and limitations of AI in marking and feedback provision since 2023. It examines AI’s ability to assess a range of written responses, with a focus on consistency and accuracy compared to human marking, including its use in marking short-answer questions in a practical test setting.
The session also draws on staff and student survey data to explore attitudes, concerns and perceptions regarding AI’s role in assessment and feedback.
Rather than presenting a formal assessment transformation, this session aims to share observations and findings from out work and stimulate discussion by highlighting emerging opportunities, limitations, critical considerations and implications of AI for future assessment practices.
About Lead Through Learning (2025-2027)
This series of events supports Lead through Learning (2025-2027)—our whole-of-University strategy addressing the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in education.
The strategy has 2 main goals:
- Preparing students for responsible AI use. Equipping students with ethical, practical AI skills they can use in their studies, careers, and communities, and preparing them to lead and shape the future of AI integration in their fields.
- Maintaining the integrity of the learning process. Ensuring that academic standards are upheld through secure and credible assessment practices.
