Visiting Professor Cindi Fukami, sponsored by the Business School, is presenting a session on building a successful career in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Early in her career, Cindi Fukami faced the same decision many of us confront in the Teaching Focused community. Should she take a safe and traditional career path towards research? Or should she pursue her passion for teaching?

Surrounded by colleagues “who neglected their teaching”, or held “a general disdain” for it, Cindi outlines a career conversation with her Department Chair in a publish-or-perish institution. Asked by the Chair whether a presentation she had made at a teaching conference was a part of her research or teaching productivity, Cindi explains how she knew the right answer in her heart was to say the presentation was about teaching, but her head told her it was not the right answer for that institution.

Detailing her response to the Chair, Cindi illustrates a “third road” towards scholarship of teaching and learning, and the benefits of this road on her career.

This event is open to UQ students and staff. It is hosted by the Teaching Focused Network, chaired in 2024 by A/Prof Rachel Fitzgerald.

About UQ Teaching Focused Network

Coordinated by: Associate Professor Rachel Fitzgerald

The UQ Teaching Focused Network is open to all UQ staff interested in scholarly approaches to teaching, although teaching-focused (TF) staff are the primary audience.

This network connects TF academics from across UQ, promotes the sharing of practices, nurtures support for career development, enables consultation on strategic planning, and exchanges information relevant to TF roles.

The TF Network Leadership Group steers and guides the direction of the network, including events and communication amongst TF academics across UQ.
