Implement AI Companions that Encourage Learner Agency

General-purpose AI systems are designed to complete cognitive work, not necessarily to support learning. This presentation explores how AI learning companions can preserve learner agency, encourage productive thinking, and promote durable learning rather than simply improving immediate performance. It also introduces a platform developed and supported by UQ that incorporates AI learning companions, and explores how educators can integrate it into their teaching.
