Coordinating@UQ is one of the streams offered within the Teaching Foundation Course. By studying this course, you could be on your way to earning the Teaching Foundations Certificate, Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education, and entry to the Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice. 

About Teaching Foundations

Teaching Foundations supports you in creatively connecting curriculum, pedagogy and assessment to foster active student participation and learning. This introductory course helps you build essential teaching skills, create supportive learning environments, and enhance student engagement. It balances theory and practice, exploring foundational learning theories while providing opportunities to apply them.

Offered as a professional learning activity, Teaching Foundations is available in multiple streams to reflect the diversity of UQ's teaching and learning community, including:

  • Teaching@UQ – for new lecturers with no course coordination responsibilities, tutors, lab demonstrators and seminar leaders.
  • Coordinating@UQ – for new teachers who also have course coordination responsibilities.
  • Teaching Foundations RPL module – for experienced teachers with substantial teaching experience who wish to engage with the Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice.
  • CaPE@UQ (commencing Semester 2, 2025) – for new Clinical and Practice Educators.
  • LD@UQ (commencing in 2026) – for new Learning Designers.

Target audience

For academic staff with course coordination or substantial teaching roles in courses new to teaching or new to UQ. 

Recommended for Teaching Focused and Teaching/Research academics at levels A-C, and RF academics at levels C-E.

If you are not a course coordinator but would like to develop your teaching capability, you might consider enrolling in Teaching@UQ. If you are a clinical educator or placement supervisor, please look to enrol in the CaPE@UQ stream.

Course overview

Coordinating@UQ provides you with the knowledge and practical skills to build a successful teaching career in higher education. This course builds your knowledge of the fundamental principles of effective teaching for learning in higher education relevant to your teaching contexts. 

Coordinating@UQ is taught via face-to-face workshops (conducted in-person or online) pre-reading, online activities and peer-to-peer feedback. 

Coordinating@UQ is free to UQ staff. 

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing Coordinating@UQ, you should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate teaching and learning approaches that support student engagement;  
  2. Demonstrate effective and inclusive teaching practices;  
  3. Critically reflect on choices related to inclusive learning design and teaching practice in the disciplinary context.  
  4. Critically reflect on how teaching and/or supporting learning practice has been enhanced through engagement with professional learning.

Course offerings

Coordinating@UQ is generally offered 3 times a year – Summer Semester (Intensive), Semester 1 (Intensive) and Semester 2. Enrolments are capped at 40 participants per offering. Confirmation of each offering is dependent on sufficient enrolment numbers.

Time commitment

In addition to attending all workshops and, completing all the learning activities outlined in the course schedule, it is recommended you set aside 10 hours per week to complete preparatory work, independent study and assignments.

If you have planned long overseas absences or are in the final stages of thesis write-up, it is recommended that you complete Coordinating@UQ at another time.

Outcome

Upon successful completion, you will:

  • Be awarded the Teaching Foundations Certificate
  • Become an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), a mark of professional recognition that enhances your teaching career globally
  • Join a community of over 190,000 educators worldwide who hold Fellowship status with Advance HE
  • Be invited to apply for enrolment in the Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice (eligibility criteria apply). 

Coordinating@UQ has been developed in the context of UQ’s policies and the Academic Annual Performance Development (APD) process, so will also support you to develop your career in higher education. 

Successful completion of Coordinating@UQ involves active participation in online activities, undertaking workshops (with peer feedback) and passing summative assessment tasks. 

Your pathway to the Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice 

Participants who meet the eligibility criteria and have successfully completed Coordinating@UQ will be invited to apply for enrolment in the Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice. 

You will receive credit for Teaching Foundations (EDHE6001), the first course in the Graduate Certificate, and be on your way to earning the full qualification.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants should meet all of the following criteria:

  • Hold a minimum of an Undergraduate degree from any institution.
  • Be a UQ staff member.
  • Hold a course, module, path or major or program coordination role at UQ.
  • Can attend all workshops and participate in all the learning activities outlined in the program timetable.
  • Have approximately 10 hours per week to complete preparatory work, independent study and assignments; and have support from your line manager.

If you do not meet all eligibility criteria, your application may not be approved.
