Leading Teaching Project
Develop the practical tools to make a real impact in teaching and learning.
There are 2 ways to complete Leading Teaching Project:
- As a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice (GCUTP) student. Refer to Programs and Courses (EDHE6004) for course details and enrol through mySI-net.
Or
- As standalone professional development. Open to UQ staff not enrolled in the GCUTP. Refer to this page for details and application instructions.
Course overview
This course gives you the opportunity to network and collaborate with peers while planning and leading innovation through the development of a scholarly educational project. You will investigate an aspect of teaching and learning of mutual interest to you and your School or department. Supported by workshops, mentors and networks, you will develop a complete and viable proposal in an area relevant to teaching and learning beyond the confines of your own classroom or immediate context. This course enables you to engage with innovation, educational reform and scholarship to develop your leading teaching expertise through scholarship and inquiry.

Course offerings
Leading Teaching Project is typically offered in Semester 1 in odd years and Semester 2 in even years. Each offering is capped at 50 participants and will only proceed in the minimum enrolment numbers are met.
Semester 2, 2026
Leading Teaching Project will run in Semester 2, 2026 between 20 July - 13 November. A provisional schedule will be released in early 2026, comprising workshops, professional learning community meetings, a showcase event and assessment deadlines.
Time commitment
You're expected to actively participate in all course activities. In addition to the time spent in workshops and professional learning communities, you should anticipate approximately 10-12 hours per week for preparatory work, independent study and assignments.
Outcome
This course is designed to cultivate your academic leadership by guiding you through a project of your choosing – one that allows you to demonstrate and strengthen your ability to lead within your field. You'll engage in deep reflection and critically analyse an area of your teaching expertise. You will explore new perspectives while honing your leadership skills and driving meaningful change in your teaching and learning environment.
By the end of the course, you won’t just have refined your own approach – you’ll have developed and implemented impactful strategies, materials, or activities that showcase your leadership in action. This process is about more than personal growth; it’s about setting a vision, inspiring others, and leaving a lasting mark on educational practice.
What credentials will I receive?
I'm studying the course as professional learning
Depending on the nature of your Teaching Project, you may be able to develop a case study to support an application for HEA Senior Fellowship.
I'm a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice (GCUTP) student
Leading Teaching Project is one of 4 courses that make up the GCUTP. To be awarded the qualification, you must complete all 4 courses at a Pass level.
GCUTP and Recognition of Prior Learning
The Leading Teaching Project course is not eligible for RPL within the GCUTP. If you are currently enrolled in, or planning to enrol in, the GCUTP, you will be required to complete this course as part of the program.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants should meet all of the following criteria:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in any discipline
- Be employed at UQ with teaching and/or teaching support responsibilities (full-time, part-time, or sessional) for the duration of the course
- Be able to attend all workshops and participate in all learning activities outlined in the course schedule
- Demonstrate substantial teaching responsibilities over a period of more than 3 years, extending beyond occasional lecturing or tutoring
- Have the support of your Head of School or Supervisor to participate.
If you do not meet all eligibility criteria, your application may not be approved.

Enrol in Leading Teaching Project (EHDE6004) through mySI-net.
Course quota
Enrolments are capped at 50 participants per offering, including both GCUTP students and professional learning participants. Applying does not guarantee enrolment.
Where a course is oversubscribed, GCUTP students will be given first preference, followed by ranking based on appointment classification and type, with priority to continuing staff.
